Skills and methods suggested for the course (we choose from these on the second workshop):
Understanding design and basic concepts of empirical studies.
Drafting study protocols and an ethical permission
Developing hypotheses and a quick review on how to do literature search.
Data collection for electrodermal activity using the Obimon hardware and software
Assembling and managing data in Excel, data analyses of real-time data
Overview of the statistic methods – choosing the right one
General guidelines for writing research papers
How to use reference managers, eg. Zotero.
The goal of the courses
Sufficient command of certain skills are inevitable in our research field (e.g. DNA sampling for psychogenetic studies, or precise measuring of certain biometrical data, e.g. electrodermal activity or reaction time). Throughout this course we review skills that need development for taking part in the research of the laboratory in the framework of writing research papers, thesis, or student conference papers. We discuss individual needs and requirements related to student’s own study design, ethical approval, research tools, data collection methods and data analyses. We discuss the timeline of certain tasks (related to needs of the students’ research work) and agree when to do group discussions, or individual consultation. Timeline of the course is drafted on the course website and refined on student’s need discussed on the first class.
Conditions of the course completion
Evaluation: based on individual achievement of the skills thought. Students are required to attend at least 50% of arranged meetings based on their selection, and to complete the required tasks we agree on at the beginning of the course based on their selection of topics in a timely fashion.
Bibliography, additional materials
Selected individually based on the chosen topic. Proper collection and assessment of literature is required.
