Outline and Research questions of the 1-Year Project
Children spend large parts of their daily lives in groups of peers (e.g., kindergarten, school), where they need to develop social competence and emotional management skills. To date, it remains a significant methodological challenge to objectively assess children’s social and emotional skills. With today’s advances in smart sensor technology, however, wireless sensors that track distance to other sensors, activity levels, and physiology (e.g., electrodermal activity) have become so small and light that they can be easily worn without disturbing the participant (Kasos et al., 2019; Messinger et al., 2022). The goal of this project was to use innovative smart sensor technology to measure social and emotional competences (Horn et al., 2023).
Project 1: Can we find automated measures of friendly and dominant interactions among children?
Project 2: Can we use play activities in a “smart learning environment” to investigate children’s cooperative and competitive skills?
Project 3: Empower yourself – Testing the effectiveness of biofeedback training for coping with social anxiety
