PSYB19-113 Affective psychology practical
Schedule and place: Thursdays, 15:00-16:30, IZU P1
The goal of the course
The course aims to demonstrate and explain the fundamental psychological processes of healthy adults in the areas of motivation and emotion based on personal experience and to improve critical thinking and presentation skills. Participating in personal experience-based demonstrations of the different phenomena is voluntary, but it is an important part of your professional training.
Type of class: practical
Requirement: practical grade. A maximum of three failures to attend the class is allowed (whatever the reason…), but none of which may coincide with the student’s scheduled time of “activity” (see below). 4 or more misses mean that you cannot get a practical grade.
Method arising from the class type: active methodology with a gamified strategy. Demonstration, pair and group activities in-class will be used.
Method of evaluation: practical grade, composed of the average of two grades: the midterm and the activity (oral and written parts!), but the final grade for the practical may be influenced by participation in class work (homework, comments, questions raised, questions asked, etc.). Both grades must be at least a two. Otherwise, the practical grade is a 1 (fail).
At the end of the semester, you will get a joint grade, which is the combination of your practical grade (45%) and your exam grade for the lecture (55%). Although you must register for the practical and the lecture independently, only those can get the joint grade who were registered for the practical and the lecture.
Midterm: The second midterm is for writing it if you missed the first or want to improve your grade. There is no other opportunity to write the midterm! A missed midterm means there is no practical grade. The topic of the midterms is based on a) the material touched upon in the classes (including the video demonstrations), b) the description and explanation of the studied phenomena, and c) the required reading.
The midterms will include short essay questions.
The dates and topics of the midterms:
When can you take it?
Aprill 9th - Midterm I
May 14th - Midterm II
“Activity”: The aim of these small pair work “activities” is to make you practice
- working together with others and orally presenting a project you choose
- The project itself should be based on
o Pick a subtopic you are interested the most in Affective psychology (refer to the topic list we will have during the semester) and create a well-aimed presentation that shows why the given subtopic is relevant, worth studying, and what potential research gaps it has.
o Try to find an interesting but concrete subtopic and illustrate/demonstrate it during your presentation (e.g., photos, videos, demonstrations, etc.). It is a must that your topic is in the field of Affective psychology!
o It is compulsory to find relevant, current scientific literature which you will use to back up your arguments. Use at least 5 English sources with precise references!
· On Weeks 11and 12, the pairs will have an opportunity to give a 15-minute presentation on their selected topic. The activity cannot be done individually. In case of an odd number of students in the group, we will also create ONE trio (and they will have 20 minutes for their presentation). The first slide should include your name and the title of the presentation, while on the last slide(s), you should list your references (and you should include the sources on the other slides as well). A signed Declaration (see the last page of this file; both presenters should sign!) and the PPT must be send via email on the day of the activity at the latest.
If the uploaded version (or part of it) is missing, the grade is lowered by two grades for the activity! And you get this grade just after you have uploaded the missing parts.
General requirements of the activity:
· You may select the immediate topic with the restriction in the area of motivation or emotions.
· You should prepare a PPT presentation
· You should use at least 5 scientific references: not just textbooks but scientific articles as well, and at least 50% of your references must be dated between 2014-2024.
· The structure of the activity/presentation follows scientific publications. Use references precisely! (For formal instructions, see the recommended readings listed at week 1. Help for APA style in PPTs: http://libraryguides.bennett.edu/home/library-tutorials/apa-style-presentations)
Upon the evaluation of the oral part of the activity, the following will be considered: content and sources, presentation style, and observing the time limit.
